Back in
April we spotlighted a phenomenal spoken word artist Daniel Custodio in our
Culture Corner segment entitled Opening “Up The Poet Daniel” with the
promise of sharing part II of that article in our May edition. That was not
done and to my readers I say, please forgive us. We have included the
conclusion to the face to face interview I had the privilege of conducting
with one of the most gifted, wise, and thought provoking poets of our times.
We ended part I of our article with
Daniel saying these words “My poetry is for all people who wish to rise
above ignorance but my niche is the Latino community”. I asked him why? Here
is what he had to say about is statement among many other things.
XR:
So Daniel, why is your niche the Latino community?
Daniel:
It is very important for me to stay true to my heritage. I grew up in a
loving home with both a mother and father in a community with section 8
housing. I was very fortunate to have both parents in the home. When I left
for college, which is not something that was afforded to a large majority of
the people in my neighborhood, I felt guilty that doors were opening up for
me that were not opening up to other in the community. I decided then that
guilt would not benefit my people. I felt the best way to help my people was
to use the gift of poetry as a spoken word artist to awaken my people so
that they could help themselves.
XR:
I guess this rolls us right into your current tour. Tell me about it.
Daniel:
Currently I am touring and performing my new collection of poems entitled
Hooked to college students. My goal is to hit every Latino organization in
the nation and give the power of individuality to college students.
XR:
Tell me about “Hooked”.
Daniel:
“Hooked” is a collection of poetry that starts out in my child hood and
cover topics of faith, hurt, depression, and getting past the hooks that
snag you in life.
XR: So you
are touring about half the time within any give month. What keeps you busy
when you’re not on tour?
Daniel:
I am the Slam Master for Slam Nahuatl. Slam Nahuatl includes top ranking
poets Rasul The Knowbody(Rasul Elder), El Poeta (Chris Johnson), Rob Gibson,
The Alchemist (Jude Fage’as), and myself Daniel.
XR: How did
becoming a slam master change you?
Daniel:
Well, I’m not the most diplomatic person and I can have a sharp tongue. When
I started Slam Nahuatl in my first year I felt I had something to prove. I
learned over time that that should not have been my focus. In our second
year, we grew and became more like a family. We really started to grow as
people and poets when we adopted the End Hunger Poetry Slam. I stopped
worrying about other venues and focused on our mission. Also, being the Slam
Master and leader of these young poets, it helped me as a person to clean up
my life so that I can be a better leader and role model.
XR: I know you have a problem
with some of the self-proclaimed spoken word artists out today. Tell me what
that is.
Daniel: I
have a problem with poets whose lives contradict the message in their art.
They speak about one thing but live another.
XR: Okay so we are at the end of
our interview. Thanks for opening up to me and the rest of the XR The
magazine family. You mentioned a quote to me that you reflect on. I want to
end with that quote. Please share it with our readers, specifically our
poets.
Daniel: The quote is from Roger
Bonair Agard. The minute you start writing to make money or fame from your
gift, your writing becomes ineffective.
