We all know June is known as the
“graduation” month. High school students across the country look forward to
walking across the stage to receive their diploma, awards, recognitions,
etc… all signifying the page turn from one significant milestone to adult
life. I can recall my graduation day as vividly as I can yesterday (and
believe me that’s been many yesterdays ago. Well not that many
J).
I was so excited about entering the stage, receiving my diploma, and
throwing my tasseled cap in the sky along with my peers who had achieved the
same milestone as me and looking forward to the infinite possibilities that
life had to offer. I cannot recall who the key note speaker was or what the
message was about. Looking back over my life, I often wonder if I had not
been so eager to step into my new life and take a moment to enjoy this once
in a lifetime moment, if the words of encouragement and advise our speaker
was charged to give would have impacted my life so that my current outcome
was different somehow. Of course, that time is gone and I will never know.
So as I receive the graduation service and party invites I wonder if I had
the chance to deliver a key note message to a young me, what would I say to
me and my class members? So here it is my key note address to me and my
class mates. Crossland Senior Highschool Class of 19… (Gotcha)!!
“I stand
before you today charged with an honorable and difficult task. I am honored
that the staff of this magnificent institution
of learning entrusted me with the task of delivering the message that should
catapult you into your new life. Difficult, because I am tasked with
delivering the message that should catapult you into your new life. When I
thought about what it is that I wanted to say to you all that you have not
heard before these words came to mind “Carpe Diem”. “To Seize The Day”.
Never take one day of your life’s journey for granted. Stop and smell more
than the roses. Smell your life’s purpose through our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. Smell the love and support of family and friends. Smell the social
issues and challenges that life is sure to bring your way. Smell success and
let it resonate in your life daily accepting not the smell of failure. Smell
the joys of parent hood. Smell the achievements you are sure to make (beyond
today’s which at this point is your greatest). A poet friend of mine named
Naz dak wrote a poem entitled “Enjoy the Journey”. The poem speaks to
stopping and enjoying all of life, not just the good times. Carpe Diem!
Seize the day!! and make each one count. Go after life like it’s your last
day each and everyday because in the end it’s not the date you were born or
the date you depart this life that matters, it’s the dash in between that
says it all”. If years from now you don’t remember me or this speech,
remember one thing Carpe Diem!!
If you could deliver the key note
address to yourself and your class mates, what would you say?
