“Missing Michael Jackon long
before he died”.
EDITOR’S
CHOICE JULY 2009
Article By: Felicia
“Transition” Winston
Editor-In-Chief, Xander Records, The Magazine
I put this question out
on my Face Book page and got some pretty poignant and surprising responses
that sparked a heated debate. I decided to share my thoughts and that
question with my X-Mag family.
“I am singing Diana
Ross’s, “OOOOHHHH I’m missing you. Tell my why the road turns”.
The road for Michael
Jackson for the past several years seemed to have taken some very sharp
turns from the child super star to pop icon, to pioneer and unprecedented
humanitarian. Often praised and slain in the same news, radio, print, and
tabloid media, Michael’s every action and his “strange” life style was
always a hot topic be it good, Bad, or ugly. Yes, I said it “strange”. I
have been a Michael Jackson fan every since I can remember. He was teenage
heart throb. I had posters of him hanging on every wall in my room. I even
dressed like him with my gloved hand, studded double belt wrapped around me
like a serpent, my loafers, high water jeans, and white socks. I watched
his videos over and over and even danced like him.
I loved him. Loved his
voice, those sensual eyes, and that boyish smile. I did not know that behind
so much fame, and money, and fan love, that he was so disturbed. I watched
his transformation into someone my kids call “The White Michael Jackson” and
wonder why the road had to turn for this brother? I know about the skin
issue, however, aside from that, my love for Michael the pop icon and my
teen heart throb stops there. The fact that the legacies he left behind as a
black man are 100 % white disturbs me as a black woman.
Al Sharpton referring to
Michael Jackson as a black pioneer in comparison to Martin Luther King, Jr.,
Rosa Parks, and even Al Sharpton himself made me really ponder whether or
not a man who crossed the color line and never seemed to have found his way
back disturbs me as a black person. I think we should regard Michael Jackson
as a pop icon and leave it at that. To say that Michael is a black icon
seems to be almost insulting to us as a people because everything he did,
the people he befriended, his apparent loathing of his black features and
physical transformation into
“The White Michael
Jackson”, and the fact that his kids are white, tells me that this man was
ashamed of his race. As a black parent I struggle with explaining to my kids
that their skin color, their features, their hair texture, and the mere fact
that they are black is beautiful and should never be a factor in their
success, however, when one of the most highly publicized black figures in
the world changes his appearance and then leaves no heritage of himself in
his legacies, I have to ask myself is this someone who I want my kids to
look up to as a strong, black man who represents his race in a positive
manner?
So here it is, the
X-Mag Editor’s Choice
Poll Question of the month:
Should Michael Jackson be
regarded to the world as a black historical icon?
If yes why? If no, why?
Read the story and then send your
comments to
editor@xandermagazine.com. (Comments sent in will
be posted in the next X-Mag
issue). |
